Here's my favourite Talisman character.

  1. Lovely crisp, bright painting on this minstrel! You have certainly captured the spirit of the original illustration in that paintjob! I can see you have added the Google+ Followers gadget but there is a second one that makes it easier for people who don't use Google+ to saty in touch with you. Go to 'Layout', then click 'Add a Gadget' before selecting 'More Gadgets'. You should find something in there called Followers. Its very useful, but Blogger wants everyone to use Google+ and have moved it! Looking forwards to seeing what you post up next!!

    1. Thank you very much! I just added the followers gadget. I also switched over to using Google+, although I'm not sure what difference it makes to anything other than being slightly more complicated. I'm painting a wizard at the moment!

    1. Thanks Steve. The Adeptus Mechanicus you painted recently is very nice.

  4. I commend you on being able to pick a favourite Talisman mini, that's a feat in itself as far as I'm concerned.

    1. As well as the model being nice (apart from being a two dimensional, but you can just make sure you always look at it from the front) it's great fun being able to steal the Maiden and Princess from other players!

  5. Sadly missing from my collection, one of those I'll get round to it figures. Really nice job, super bright in the way Talisman figures sort of demand. Do you intend to use it for gaming talisman at all? Enjoyed a game of it with my six year old just yesterday, a big hit.

    1. Thanks very much. Hopefully I will be gaming with it pretty soon, I just need to paint a few more characters for other players to use. I play Talisman pretty regularly with friends who aren't even wargamers and so far we've never actually played a game of it using miniatures, we just use the cards that come with the game. Your six year old might like Dungeon Quest too!

  6. Thats a really nice, smooth and velvety finish on this fun old model. How long did it take you to paint it? It looks great.

    1. Thanks very much Paul. The velvety look is mostly because of the varnish: I use Tamiya Matt Clear spray. It changes the finish significantly from having the different sheens that the different paints seem to have when they dry and ties it all together somehow. I used to gloss varnish first and then matt varnish on top to really thoroughly protect them, but I stopped bothering after a while. I've dropped models with just the matt varnish on and almost always they just bounce and don't chip at all.

I painted him in an evening, and then based him the next day. The painting part probably took six hours from the start to when he was finished but that was including dinner and lots of other distractions. How long do you normally take to paint a human sized model?

    2. Varnish does do specific things to certain colours but the effects tend to be predictable at least. The minstrel looks fantastic.

Perceived wisdom regarding layering gloss and matt varnish is that its essential for gaming miniatures, but it is also something that I stopped doing a number of years ago: I dont find that the extra time spent makes a significant difference.

I find it hard to gauge exactly how long I take to paint a miniature but its roughly about the same length of time that you mention. I find it hard to lock it down exactly, due to rarely getting to sit down and paint a miniature from start to finish in a single sitting. Distractions are the order of the day.

You are getting great return on time spent Marcus, that guy looks great.
